Passaic Prep held its semiannual Blood Drive, hosted by the National Honor Society (NHS), on Monday, April 20.
The goal was to secure a healthy and sufficient blood supply for surgeries, cancer treatments, and emergencies. In the end, 56 students and teachers were able to donate — 62 total donations, as some doubled up.
Mr. Tereshko, an English teacher and National Honor Society advisor at Prep, ran the Blood Drive and encouraged students and teachers to give. Some donors were rejected due to low iron levels, recent travel, medical conditions, or recent piercings.
Mr. Tereshko said his aim is to increase donor participation in future years.
“I am so proud of all of the student and teacher donors who saved lives by giving of their time and blood, and the National Honor Society members who recruited donors and helped the event run smoothly,” he said. “I am thankful to them and the Prep administration team and custodial staff for their assistance with the event.”
For future donors, Mr. Tereshko offered the following advice for a successful donation:
- Get full night’s rest before your appointment
- Eat iron-rich foods or take vitamins (e.g., red meat or spinach)
- Do not skip meals
- Avoid exercise for 24 hours after donating
