Do you want to play Chess or learn how to play Chess? The Chess Club is the right club for you. Mr. Lockwood is the club advisor for the Chess Club, which meets after school on Thursdays in Room 301.
The Boulevard Online asked Mr. Lockwood some questions:
Q: What does the club offer students, besides chess strategy?
A: The club helps students strengthen their problem-solving abilities, helps with concentration, and encourages good sportsmanship. It is also fun to play and give students a change to hang out with each other after school and bond.
Q: What’s your ranking? Master? Grandmaster?
A: I am not a Master or a Grandmaster, I just enjoy playing chess and have fun playing against the members of the club. Sometimes I win and sometimes I lose but I always have fun doing so.
Q: How many matches happen during the clubs?
A: The club lasts for about an hour after school. On a good day, a student can play 2-3 games against other people. We have about 10 people that come regularly and other 3-4 students that come sometimes.
Q: Have you ever had a really good player come through the club?
A: We started the Chess Club at Prep during the pandemic. One of my students in 2021 asked me to be the club adviser and I said yes. Since then we have had several students that were really good and gave me a real challenge. Chess is one of the games where the more you play it against different people, the better you get. Currently we have about four players that are really good players. I don’t want to give names because I don’t want other people to feel bad. The most important thing is that everyone is having fun playing regardless if they win or lose.
