PHOTOS: Two Prep freshmen honored by Gov. Murphy

By Mr. Schmerler, Staff Advisor

Prep freshmen Camila Perez and Jules Guevara were honored by New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy on Friday, June 3, at Asbury Lanes in Asbury Park.

Camila and Jules represented Prep as the governor recognized the flag protest held on June 1, when Prep students hung Pride Flags in each forward-facing window of the building as a symbol of Pride Month. Previously, the district Board of Education had ruled that schools in Passaic were not allowed to raise any flags other than those of the state and the school itself. So instead, flags were raised in the windows — not on the flagpole.

The two freshmen enjoyed a VIP reception and dinner courtesy of the governor’s Garden State Equality group at their annual ball.

The Gay-Straight Alliance at Prep has been invited to the Governor’s Mansion to receive more honors on June 22.
