Happy National School Counseling Week!
To honor our counselors this week, The Boulevard Online will highlight the contributions from all of Prep’s excellent counselors in the main office, as well as SBYS. Today, we shine the spotlight on Ms. Yessenia Flores! Ms. Flores, known as “Ms. Yessie” to students, shared a few minutes out of her busy schedule to let the Prep community in on her favorite parts of the job.
What does it mean to you to be in a position to help students in many ways?
Ms. Flores: To me, being a School Based Counselor is not only a privilege but a reward in itself. I am able to help students and families accomplish their goals and dreams needed to be successful members of society. In the process, I am able to help students and families socialization skills, triumph trauma, and teach them how to communicate with others; it is just a priceless reward that is unexplainable.
In what area do students seem to need the most help?
Ms. Flores: At the moment, I feel students need the most help in understanding positive mental health to help guide them to make healthy choices, display appropriate behaviors, and surround themselves around positive people. Once students understand these critical components; they will be able to handle stressful situations positively and accept guidance when needed.
Is there any job you would rather have? Why?
Ms. Flores: No, I honestly enjoy and love my job! I get the opportunity to help others in different ways, create positive relationships and goals, truly a huge heartfelt reward!
What would you tell a student who wants to become a school counselor?
Ms. Flores: If becoming a counselor is your dream job, then do it! Do what makes you happy!
How will you celebrate National School Counseling Week?
Ms. Flores: I plan to bring in treats to remind my fellow colleagues that what we do as counselors/therapists does not go unseen. Every student and family we encounter is now a little more educated and positively guided, thanks to us.
