Passaic Prep students in the National Honor Society and Student Council volunteered to visit School 1 and School 15 to read books and share smiles with PreK through 3rd grade students on Wednesday, Oct. 15.
Prep students selected age-appropriate books to read to the classes and were trained in advance on best practices to lead their 25-minute presentations in three sessions. Chaperoned by Ms. Haley Scheerer, Mr. Lance Weaver, and other district library media specialists, the students walked to the grammar schools to arrive by 9 a.m. After reading the books, voicing the characters and even singing, the teachers-for-a-day asked the little ones questions and led them in activities such as drawing their favorite scene from the story. After sharing the memorable morning, the young students said goodbye to their new high school friends with many smiles and hugs.
The school visit was sponsored by the Library Community Connection Crew (LC3), headed by Dr. Joanna Antoniou and Ms. Scheerer, an organization founded this year to provide access to engaging media opportunities in district schools without a library. Similar trips are planned for later this year to other district schools.
