On a cool spring morning on Monday, May 5, Prep’s Gardening and Environmental Club went on a field trip to the Frelinghuysen Arboretum in Morristown, New Jersey. The students toured the arboretum’s many landscapes with advisors Ms. Zanabria, Mr. Ford, and Ms. Montoya in order to gain a better understanding of the different kinds of plants.
Beyond merely observing, the visit was an essential part of the club’s ongoing effort to establish and certify a pollinator garden at Passaic Prep. Under the direction of the Arboretum’s staff, students learned about different techniques of planting, watched pollinators, and participated in hands-on planting demonstrations. In addition, they got the chance to take some of the many plants and flowers from the arboretum’s lab home for the club’s next Mother’s Day campaign.
Students obtained inspiration and ideas for new additions to Prep’s garden by examining the layout and plant choices made in different areas of the arboretum. As the club works to create a sustainable, environmentally friendly garden area for Prep.
