The Prep Book Club was founded three years ago as a home for student lovers of literature. Founded by Ms. Martin, former Prep counselor Ms. Roth, and Ms. Scheerer, this club was meant to create a welcoming environment for students to talk about books and share meaningful discussions.
The goal of the group is to give students a secure, welcoming environment in which to study literature that addresses issues of self-perception, personal development, and future planning. Members can now choose their own novels and share them at meetings, while the club was first organized around group book selections such as One of Us is Lying by Karen M. McManus and The Girl Who Fell Beneath the Sea by Axie Oh.
“Book Club is my happy place. Each year, the club differs slightly based on the students who join, but overall, the meetings remain a collaborative and welcoming environment for lovers of literature,” said Prep English teacher, instructor of Gothic Studies, and club advisor Ms. Martin, highlighting how the club’s basic principles of transparency and a common interest endure despite the annual changes in its membership.
Furthermore, the group, which at first mostly included seniors, has grown to include PASE students as well as middle and high school students. The club includes creative activities in addition to reading. The organization gives its members a variety of creative outlets, from making themed postcards to designing bookmarks. The highlight of last year was a tea party with an Alice in Wonderland theme, which was a fun way to honor friendship and literature.
One important aspect of the Book Club is fostering a sense of friendship. Discussions create friendly communication and a range of opinions along with a variety of points of view, helping form bonds.
The group is starting a new project this year: creating public domain audiobooks that are copyright-free in order to assist students with special needs.
“Book club is such an amazing group to be a part of! If you love spending time with friends who love stories, if you love crafting … or if you even just love bookish crafting and listening to music—this is your place!” said Library Media Specialist and club advisor Ms. Scheerer, demonstrating that Book Club is more than just a school activity; it’s a place where community and creativity work together.
Members also look forward to their beloved annual end-of-year party with great anticipation. Book Club is about more than just reading; it’s about making new friends, learning new viewpoints, and engaging with literature.
The Prep Book Club offers students the ideal setting for storytelling, creativity, and friendship if they want to immerse themselves in a friendly literary community. Join fellow book enthusiasts as they read, create, and celebrate literature at meetings held every other Thursday in the Media Center!
