Do you want to get the chance to express your Hispanic/Latino cultural roots? Prep’s Spanish Honor Society demonstrates how language can promote a stronger sense of community and culture. Founded in 2024 by Ms. Mordaga and Ms. Reyes, the Spanish Honor Society has quickly become a center for language learning, cultural celebrations, and service. Through projects focused on the community, this society is promoting an appreciation of the Spanish language while developing in the students leadership and empathy.
The successful Valentine’s Day fundraiser conducted on February 12th and 13th was the society’s first major achievement. It was an exciting experience for the group and most importantly laid the foundation on which the future plans would be built; a blend of cultural appreciation with meaningful service.
The Spanish Honor Society’s work is motivated by this sense of solidarity. In order to build a strong sense of community, dedication, and responsibility, the club actively solicits feedback from its 25 members.
“Our chapter of the Spanish Honor Society encapsulates our community and is a platform to promote culture and pride within each of us,” said club president Jose Mata.
To better introduce students to Spanish-speaking cultures, the group is also coming up with ideas for field trips, events, and volunteer opportunities in addition to raising money. The society’s goal of celebrating heritage and giving back to the community is reflected in these programs.
Expectations for the Spanish Honor Society’s future are high as it continues to thrive. The club’s conviction that language can bring people together and spur change is reflected in every action, from coming up with new ideas to planning events.
The Spanish Honor Society is strengthening and uniting the Prep community one word, one student, and one action at a time.
