On the cold and spooky day of Nov. 14, 2024, Class of 2025 seniors who take Gothic Studies with Ms. Martin went on the 3rd annual trip to Sleepy Hollow, N.Y. Students and staff toured the home of the famous writer Washington Irving, whom students read in the first marking period, as well as his grave just a few minutes from his home.
Washington Irving (1783-1859) was one of the first famous writers to have writing be a full-time job. He created a story based on legends in Sunnyside, N.Y., which led to one of his most famous stories “The Legend of Sleepy Hollow.” The story stars the legend of a headless horseman whose head was decapitated by a cannonball. Legend has it on Halloween night he would rise to avenge his death and reclaim his head.
