Among Us is a multiplayer video game developed by Inner Sloth, making its debut on June 15, 2018. Among Us has recently been gaining popularity. The game can be played on the following platforms: iOS, Microsoft Windows, and Android.
I first learned of the game from Tik Tok, leading me to see the excitement surrounding the game. After downloading it, you’re given a tutorial on how to play. There are two goals, depending on your role. Before the game starts you are chosen at random whether you’re a crewmate member or an imposter. Crewmates are to complete tasks to fix the ship along with trying to defeat the imposter(s). Imposters are crewmates who have been replaced by a parasitic shapeshifter. Their goal is to eliminate the crewmates without raising suspicions towards them. There are a total of three different maps to play from, The Skeld, MIRA HQ, and Polus, along with an option to have 1-3 imposters. Each game can have a max of 10 players.
I’d spend some time practicing with the freeplay opinion before playing with other people. I’m not afraid to admit that I was overwhelmed when I first started playing with other people. When I first started off, I would get chosen as crewmate and my only goal was to not be the first one out and finish my tasks.
I can say confidently that completing the tasks wasn’t the hard part, but trying to make sure you’re not acting “sus,” or suspicious, was the challenge. Oftentimes, when I would be completing my own tasks, for example, fixing the wires at Navigation away from the body found at Electrical, I would be accused of killing a crewmate because there was no one to say I was completing a task. This would lead to the other players voting me out, allowing for the impostor to still be in the game. It can get frustrating at times, but at least you become a ghost who can get their tasks done quicker, as they are able to fly through walls.
Overall, I really enjoy playing this game, especially with friends! Among Us has given us a way to still have fun with friends without the risk of getting sick during Covid. I’d give this a rating of 8 out of 10. Sometimes the servers can be down, causing technical difficulties such as getting booted out of the game, and certain tasks can be harder if you’re playing on a mobile device. Other than that, I like how you can customize your player from the color you play, the hats your character can have on, pets and skins you can have, and your onscreen name.
If you haven’t played yet, I highly recommend you do!
